[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] DOS 4.01 or Extended Mem. Manager?

frankhua@cs.mcgill.ca (Frank X.J HUANG) (02/06/91)

I have some problem with the accessing of 4M memory(SIMM) on my 386 pc. It
works ok for Win3.0, but when I try to use other applications(outside
window) like QuickC, it seems the program can't see the extended memory.
Someone told me that I should either upgrade to DOS 4.01(current 3.3) or
buy a Extended/Expanded manager(about 120 bucks).

Can anyone tell me whether Dos 4.01 can handle extended memory or not?
What shall I do? Any alternatives?

Thanks a lot.

Since you have windows, you also have EMM386.SYS. It's on disk 2. Don't
forget to use EXPAND to uncompress the files off of the distribution disk.
It should be in you \windows directory, and is documented on page 540 of the
windows manual.

You should check to see what you applications use. Some may need exTENded
memory, some may need exPANded. Look at what all you run to see what the
best way to configure you system to be.

OBWindowsBash: Ever noticed that MS supplied several different versions of
system drivers with windows that had the same name as the dos drivers, but
worked slightly differently? Pretty damn annoying, esp if you were trying
to clear out duplicate files and erased the wrong one.
