[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] External 5 1/4 Drive Problem

lloyd@sci.ccny.cuny.edu (Williams Lloyd) (02/17/91)

I'm having the following problem installing a 5 1/4 1.2MB floppy
disc drive to an IBM PS/2 30-286 computer and I was wondering if
anybody could help.
Before I describe the problem I would like to point out that I am
aware that the BIOS with the PS/2 does not support this type of drive
as an external floppy, but the company who supplies the hardware
provides software that is meant to do the job.
The problem is this, when the drive is first installed the first time
the computer is booted up it is meant to notice somthing new is
there and give a 162 config error, you then byepass this (hit F1)
and run the software to install it. However, the computer never
notices its there. The problem seems to be that the computer
thinks both the internal and new external floppies are the A drive.
After conecting it the lights on the internal and external drives
always light up at the same time. DIR a: & DIR b: both give the
a drive listing.
The B drive is conected in parallel to the A drive inside the machine
via a control card. Is there another place to connect the B drive?
Also, the wire from the A drive to the mother board is a straight
34 core cable, no twists.
The drive is a TEAC drive purchased from CYAN in Oklahoma.
The company has agreed to give me my money back but I would like to
get it working if I could as I need it urgently.
If all else fails does any one know a good alternative source for this
product.
Thanks in advance for any help.
P.S. I have discussed this with the company they're stumped too.
P.P.S. I have also tried moving the drive select on the external
from d1 to d2 nothing changed!!
