[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Help problem with dos 4.01?????? Or hardware???? Or ME???????

wags@bsu-cs.bsu.edu (Steven Wagner) (02/20/91)

Hello there netlanders.!

At the risk of revealing my ignorance I have to ask for some help on
a problem that I'm experiencing in the dos 4.01 environment. Please excuse the
lengthy explanation but I wish to make myself as clear as possible. First my
hardware platform:
IBM ps2 model 55 SX with 2 meg of RAM
60 meg hard drive one C partition
		Standard Big blue stuff.

Now we(I) installed 4.01 (so the label says) and
the patches available from the IBM BBS out of atlanta. So presumably this
version of Dos is comparable to MS_DOS 4.01??????
My path statement is maxed out to 124 bytes including using the
subst command. my prompt is 3 short lines with color. My config.sys file has
the buffers set at 20, files set at 100, ibmcache in the extended memory at
512k, ansi.sys is loaded, share is invoked with the L switch set to 99, and
lastdrive set to h to cover the subst command in the autoexec.bat.
Now for the problem. I'm developing a database application in a lang.
named Clarion. It opens 48 files in all plus the files that the processor
opens when it is running. I get 2 type of errors when doing this. The first and
most common is an ov0002 overlay error in the processor program, cpro.exe. I
believe it can not find the temporary overlay file it wrote to disk. The
other is an error generated when the program is converted to an .exe and run.
It gets to open the last file and bombs on a clarion specific error
"Can't read file from disk" I believe this to is an overlay error in the
.exe file running the application. Regardless the program will not run and
after the first error mentioned will cause a system lockup that only a cold
boot will resolve.

Notes: I've tried this with the environment striped to the bare bones. I always
have no less than 547k to run the program in. The data files that are declared
opened at the same time. The combined record declaration length of these
files are greater than 64k. The exact same problem occurs on a novel network
running netware 2.15 on model 80's running pc-dos 4.01 with no patches.

Frustrated I put the package on another 55SX configured exactly the
same except for the environment. Path is much shorter. And there are no 4.01
patches installed. Runs just fine!!!!! By the way on the first day I tried
the first machine mentioned without the patches and experienced the same
problem I got the patches at the advice of Clarion Tech. support.
This system runs just fine under dos 3.3 with any environment restrictions.

Tech support at Clarion was lost and expensive. I've spent 2 days on
the problem and am beginning to believe that there is a hardware problem on
the first 55SX mentioned.

Questions:

Could a packed environment cause such a problem as lost overlay files to the
application?

Can a rom or eprom chip be defective?

Is PC-DOS really this unreliable? If so is there hope for my effort?

Has anyone ever experienced this type of problem on ps2's?

I hope that my case is clear? I took long enough to explain it and I thank all
of you who hung in there with me and read it through.

Thanks for your suggestions!!!!!!!

Steve!!!
