[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] How to read 1.2Meg 3.5" diskettes?

cctr132@csc.canterbury.ac.nz (Nick FitzGerald, CSC, Uni. of Canterbury, NZ) (02/21/91)

I seem to remember this beiing asked before, but a check of Raymond's
excellent FAQ list didn't shed any light on the issue, so I'm posting.

A visiting lecturer from Japan has a portable PC that has a 3.5" drive
which appears to format, read & write 1.2M floppies (yes, 1.2 Meg 3.5"
disks) *AND* it cannot understand any other formats. He wants to get
stuff off the hard disk for us, and put some local files onto the HD.

The machine has a com port, but there is no apparent equivalent to the
MODE and CTTY commands, so we can't upload LapLink or similar to effect
the file transfers.

Is there a device driver or utility program that can muck around with
one of our HD 3.5" disk-drives to allow it to read (and write?) floppies
from the portable?? (We know about the Central Point Software card that
allows these sorts of things, but that is a fairly expensive option for
just transferring a few files.)

Many thanks for your time, and the replies I hope to receive,

Nick.
