I have been out of the PC world for a few months and am wondering what people are now using for multitasking programs on 286 machines. I have a 16MHz 286 with 1MB RAM, 512K EMS board, 40MB hard drive, and Hercules clone video setup. I have heard a lot about the new Windows 3.0. I used to use Windows 2.03 or whatever but only when I wanted to play around, it could never handle the apps I ran. I have tried DESQview but I didn't like how complex the setup was for each application. The thing that got me going was the announcement of DESQview/X. I primarily access UNIX machines (Sequent multiprocessors, DEC 5500, Sun's, IBM RS/6000, and HP 300 and 800's). I like Sunview the best, but X Windows is about the same. These windows programs actually multitask and I like that, plus you can run anything from inside of them (basically as if from the command line). I would like to find something similar. I don't need the fancy graphics, or even windows for that matter. If there was an NDOS instead of DoubleDOS that would be ideal. I have used Back and Forth a bit, but I'd prefer something that could utilize memory a touch better. The applications I run all the time are: Telix tellecommunications program Multi-Edit editor MASM 5.1 Codeview WordPerfect 5.1 Various compilers (Quick C, Turbo Pascal) Quattro Pro Norton utils and Commander archive programs (ie PKzip) Make (Microsoft) I am usually in my editor or Telix. I do compiles from within the editor, but if I could find a multitasker that can give the MS linker enough memory that would be great. Also, there is a version of Multi-Edit that has a term communications program built in, and I might be switching to that, depending on if it has all the features I need. Any ideas???? If I add another meg of extended memory would that help? -- Chris Bailey :: baileyc@tramp.Colorado.EDU :: University of Colorado Boulder Ride fast! take chances! but tread lightly!
