[net.ham-radio] very old radio

katy@dicomed.UUCP (Kathleen Cornelson) (09/30/85)

I know next to nothing about radios, but I just purchased a
really neat old radio and would appreciate any tips on how to
use it and maintain it.

Said radio stands about 3 feet tall and is housed in an art
deco style wooden cabinet. The radio will pick up local and
short wave stations, and police bands.

Does anyone know of a good introductory type book about this
type of radio. I would like to know more about them so I don't
wreck the marvelous old beast.

I have a good friend here in San Diego, CA who makes a living
restoring and knowing a lot about old radios. He's a ham, too.
Suggest you call: Bill Gabb, K1BO, (619) 692-4321. I'm sure he
can recommend books that will help you. He can also give you
some idea of what your "baby" is worth if you give him the make
and model, etc. He's also a good source for tubes and other
hard-to-find parts. Tell him I sent you.

Some of those floor model radios are really hot receivers in that
they were made for people who lived in Upper Cornfield, Nebraska
and wanted to listen to WGN in Chicago and WNBC in New York;
likewise to BBC and Tokyo Rose. Have fun!
