[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] BIOS for a PC/AT clone

rgm@thorin.hw.stratus.com (Richard Meitzler) (03/15/91)

I want to update or replace the BIOS in my PC/AT clone system. The system is
one of the no-name PC clones. It currently has an Award BIOS Version 3.03HL
in it and that does not support the VGA adapter. The manual that I got says
something to the effect to:
The board has 2 sockets for the BIOS from either Award, Phoenix or AMI.

My question is does anyone know where any of these places are, or where I can
get a new BIOS for my PC??

They aren't places you can buy from direct as far as I know. There is one
place that comes to mind. Upgrades Etc. (they're in Computer Shopper Mag.)
they specialize in BIOS upgrades and carry just able any BIOS you could
ever need. There is one major draw back. They seem to be VERY expensive.
I wanted to upgrade my '87 AMI 286 BIOS and found it would cost $69.95
This is the only place I've seen/heard of AMI BIOSs sold separately.

Anyone else know of a *cheaper* place to buy the latest AMI BIOS???

I have no idea if it is cheaper, but I saw an add in PC Week for a place
called Unicore that sells bios upgrades.

Don't know what companies bios' they sell, but from their add:

Disclaimer: I have never dealt with Unicore (nor have any affiliation (sp?)
with them). Sorry to post a message that sounded so commercial
but our posting program will only let you followup if you have
more to say than the last person and I could not think of much
             to say.
