[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] 4dos & EXT & EMS memory

baileyc@tramp.colorado.edu (BAILEY CHRISTOPHER R) (03/20/91)

I have the following system: 286-16, 1MB RAM, 512K EMS RAM card, 40MB
hard drive.
I currently am running 4dos, but want to find out the optimal config.
I use the PCKWIK Power Pak disk cache (and keyboard, screen acceleartors).

At the current time I have HIMEM.SYS running, and 4dos when I first boot
says XMS swapping initialized, but when I jump to DOS from Telix, it uses
EMS memory instead. PCKWIK uses the rest of my extended memory for the
disk cache so the EMS memory is totally free (well, Telix and some other
programs use it, ie Multi-Edit and Quattro). What I'm wondering is, if
I tell pckwik to only use a portion of extended memory, leaving say 80K
of for anyone to use, will 4dos find it when it swaps? Also, is this the
best way to set this up. I would prefer to keep like 250K of EMS for my
application programs to use, preferably all I can get. Also, I'd like
to find out more info on using UMB's I think they are called that 4dos
talks about. The 4dos manual says it can't swap to extended memory unless
you have an XMS driver loaded, but I don't -- so how can 4dos say XMS swapping
initialized when it first boots??? (The manual says HIMEM isn't sufficient
by itself). If I need an XMS driver, are there any public domain or
shareware ones, and if not, which commericial ones are best (QRAM? -- can
I buy this seperately from DESQView?). Any examples of how people have
their systems set up, etc, would be much appreciated. Thanks!
