[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Yet another QEMM question

smsmith@hpuxa.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Stephen M. Smith) (03/23/91)

I've spent way too much time trying to configure my new
386 to work with QEMM and Desqview! Could some kind soul
who has a Micronics ASIC 386 motherboard answer the
following questions?

--Is the area between E000 and FFFF really used by the hardware
  for BIOS shadowing? That's 128k!!!

--How do I get QEMM to recognize the hardware-shadowed BIOS
correctly? I tried "NOHS" (the "no holes" parameter) in
my QEMM386.SYS line, and it still only sees 64k (the area
  in F000-FFFF).

--If I let QEMM have the area in E000-EFFF, the hardware either
screams "NO PAGE FRAMES IN E000 ADDRESS!" or I eventually lose
my shadowed BIOS if I put the frames elsewhere. If I "EXCLUDE"
  the area in E000-EFFF from QEMM's use, I can't do a CTRL-ALT-DEL
because the system hangs. That's not that serious, but it could
be just the tip of an iceberg of incompatibility. What's the
  best thing to do here?

If your motherboard has the same DIP switches my Micronics 386/33 has,
one of them should be labelled "relocate EGA/BIOS" or some such (SW1 #4
on mine). Turn it OFF, and you'll get back the E000 segment. The "relocate"
is not true shadowing--what my MB does is map in RAM at E000 and then
copy C000-C7FF to E000 and F800-FFFF to E800.

As above, turn off "relocate", and then tell QEMM to shadow ROMs itself.
