[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] desqview

Is there anyone out there who uses Desqview and QEMM? I would like some
opinions on its performance in comparison to other IBM
multitaskers/taskswitchers such as Windows 3, Double Dos, Vmix, etc...
I have purchased Windows 3 but found it to be very slow, even on my 386-25.
I can't run DOS programs in a window, which is what I really want,
with the 1 meg that I have. After seeing Desqview on a friend's computer, I'm
considering selling my Windows and getting Desqview. Should I abandon Windows
or get more memory and stick with it?

Basically what I want to do is run 2 medium sized applications or a small one
and a large one concurrently. I want speed and as little disk swapping as
possible.

Any comments would be welcomed.

I have been using Desqview for a while and find that it is pretty good, but
does have some limitations. It is good for downloading large files in one
window, while doing ordinary stuff in another. You might need more memory
though, I am using about 3 MB. Lotus 123 v2.01 works fine along with WP 4.2.
Most things work, but DV seems to be more EGA oriented, and so some mistakes
appear when displaying 256 color GIFs in a window. Initially, you have to
mess around with the parameters for the windows and the documentations is
sort of a mish mash (you have to get Desqview 386). I think there is a newer
version of DV around that v2.26, but as a registered owner, I have not gotten
anything from them. I have tried Double Dos some years previous and found that
characters from one window bled into the other, causing me to corrupt and lose
some of my files, so I gave up on Double Dos. In DV, I find that at least
the game Red Storm Rising runs in a window, but none of the other games I have
do. Also, programs with their own DOS extenders may have some trouble,
even though DV claims it can handle them. I have one program which uses
the Pharlap extender, and it runs very very slow in a DV window before crashing
the machine. (By the way, am using Procomm, for comm, and it works fine with DV)
Well, OK, any questions, feel free to email, yee@ee.ucla.edu, jy

Assuming that your applications are not Windows based applications, you would
do much better with anything other than windows. You really want at least 4Meg
to run windows satisfactorily, and even then it still will be somewhat slow.
If you are comfortable with DOS and willing to spend a little time playing
around with setup parameters, deskview is the way to go. It is the most
versatile of all the multitasker/switchers. You need to decide if you really
want a multitasker (like deskview) or are happy with just a switcher (like
double dos). But all the programs will be happier with more memory if you
can spring for it. If you really want to switch without stuff going to disk
you need enough memory for both applications plus overhead for dos and deskview
etc. 1 meg may not be enough. If you get more you can set up a disk cache and
ramdisk, and those will really speed your system up noticably.

I'm using the latest release version of DESQview-386, which includes
DESQview 2.33 (I think) and QEMM 5.11. I don't think you can do everything
you want with just 1Meg (I had 2 but went up to 4). If I remember right, I
had a 160K and a 256K application running which left me just shy of opening
a 512K byte DOS window, before I added the extra 2Meg of memory. Your
mileage may vary, of course.

I find DESQview to take up less memory and have less processing overhead
than windows. DESQview is better if you're interested in multi-tasking
communications tasks, but doesn't handle swapped graphics (VGA ->) so well.
I'm quite satisfied with it.

DO I need desqview to redirect MS Windows 3.0 (in 386 enhanced mode) to use
the high memory area instead of the low one, or is there some way I can
configure it myself? I need to free up low memory area space to use lotus
1-2-3 in coinjugation with windows.

And if I do need desqview 2.3/386 what do I have to do in order to rediorect
windows as stated above?
