[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Reading System 36 floppies on regular AT

igb@cunixa.cc.columbia.edu (Isidore G Bendrihem) (03/29/91)

I'm in desperate need of being able to read IBM System 36 floppies on my
regular AT clone. Anybody knows of any software (pd or commercial) or
combination hardware/software that would allow me to do this? The System
36 floppies contains text files only, spanning across several floppies.
I know I can buy a System 36 that would do this, but I'm looking for a
much less expenssive solution. Many thanks!!

We use a package called "The Reformatter" to read 5.25" and 8"
System/3x diskettes. We obtained it from ITS (Independent Technical
Services (?)), which seems to specialize in disk drive repair, about 9
months ago. A device driver is installed with parameters describing
the drive controllers and units you wish the software to use. The
main application, DOS2IBM, is used to shuttle files to and from MSDOS.
We are very happy with its performance and ease of use.

There is one other company I know of, Flagstaff Engineering, that also
markets such a product. I have some of their promotional literature
at work. We were seriously considering buying one of their systems
until we found out we could save many hundreds of $$$ buying from ITS.

I will email the company addresses & phone numbers to you when I get
the chance, as well as to any others who might be interested.
