It would be perfectly fine to tar all the files, except the tar file format is not an efficient method of grouping files. My recommendation: Use the LHARC program (latest unix port available on 133.11.11.11 under fj/lharc1.02) for efficient file grouping and maximum compression. Then, use the MSDOS LHARC (or the new LHa) utility to decompress the file. The MSDOS version of LHa (the successor to LHARC) can be found on simtel20 under pd1:<msdos.arc-lbr> as lha211*. LHa can decompress the old LHARC files created by the UNIX lharc program.
