[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Change the order of boot selection

chrisb@hubcap.clemson.edu (Chris Behrens) (03/29/91)

I want to change the order the system looks for the valid system disk
from A:, B:, C:... to C:, A:, B:... so that either the hard drive is
check first, or that the disk drives are not checked. I would prefer to
just change the order, not knock out the diskette drives.

Thank You.

The order in which the system checks for a boot disk is A: then C:. B:
is never checked as a boot drive (execpt on one card I remember reading
about). Neither is D:, E:, etc. checked. The only bootable drives are A:
and C:. At startup, the computer verifies that drive B: is present, but
it never tries to boot from it.
The only way to have the computer try booting from drive C: first
is to have no A: drive in the machine (ie. disconnect the drive cable
or disable the drive in setup). But you said you would rather not
sacrifice a floppy. However, if you simply tell setup that there is no
drive A: you can always easily reenable it when you need it (just a
suggestion for machines with setup in ROM).
Unfortunately there is no way to change the order in which the
computer checks its boot drives.

Good Luck,
Mike

The setup in my BIOS allows you to select the boot order. Also has an
option to prompt the user for a boot disk before atually booting up the
system. I am using a Microid Research BIOS (version 1.1).

I think there is a way even though I don't know how to do it.
The laptop computer from GRID (Gridcase 1530) always boots from C:
unless you hold down a certain key during the boot time.
The machine came with its DOS installed and the manual says nothing about
how it is done.
Anybody has any idea how they do it ?

from what i've heard, just about anything is possible if you're
willing to reburn your eproms. not that *i'd* do it... :)

Regarding the subject of selecting boot devices and partitions, I have to
gloat a little bit.

**All** Tandon systems offer this feature. We optionally provide a boot menu
listing all partitions (active or not) on up to 4 boot devices. This can
total 16 different items to boot from (which I have only actually seen once!)

It requires smart BIOS **and** an operating system that does not assume
it is the first device on the disk controller (unit '80'). Our systems
require Tandon DOS to fully support all these features. EXAMPLE: Unix and
Xenix will only boot from the primary device.

We have offered this and an integral setup screen in our BIOS since 1986,
and we were the first to offer either feature. The setup screen can also
be set to run in any of 6 languages... Enough for now...

As mentioned in an earlier article, the only other systems **I** have seen
that offer a selectable boot order are those containing Microid Research
"Mr. BIOS." Understandable. The developer of Mr. BIOS used to work for me!
We called him Mr. BIOS in our hallways here... He's going gangbusters and
I wish him well.

This isn't quite true either. It first checks A:, then the first hard drive
partition. I have three floppies, A:, B:, and C:. My HD starts at D: and it
boots fine from there.

Hmmm.. get a custom ROM BIOS? Or if you have a Zenith,
you can set this from DIP switches on the processor
card.
