[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Resolving boot conflict

joshua5@bucsf.bu.edu (Jim Peters) (04/06/91)

Problem: Unable to boot from C: partition on standard ibm type 33 drive
with a second drive on a scsi controller.

Description: I just installed my Seagate ST1096N SCSI drive on my Model
50Z and am able to see the drive but I can not boot from any
where but floppy. If I unplug the Seagate, then I have no
problems. I have not touched the original IBM 30 MB drive.

Hardware: IBM PS/2 50Z std 1 MB memory, 1 3.5" floppy.
Slot 4 IBM Controller with standard IBM Type 33 30 MB drive
Slot 2 Future Domain MCS700 SCSI 2 Controller
-- Seagate ST1096N Disk SCSI ID 2 (no other SCSI devices)

OS: DOS 4.00 circa August 1988 (original distribution)

Notes: The SCSI ID makes no difference. I wouldn't mind if this could
be changed to the boot device.

Booting from floppy works with no problems. I can get at the scsi
        disk.

Five jumper posts on the seagate determine device id. 1 jumper.

Five unknown posts on old IBM drive labeled JP. No jumpers on them.

Thoughts: I think the seagate thinks it should boot, but it is drive 1 and
not 0. (Or at least it shows up as the second drive in any list
	   that comes up)

I noticed 5 unmarked jumpers on the old IBM drive. They are
only labeled as JP. They're bare and I don't have any jumpers
that are the right size to play with.

The options allowed on the Reference disk make no difference in
the combinations I tried. Since I don't know the technical
aspects of the various choices, I need guidance here if that is
           the problem.

What to blame:
             DOS 4.00, it is original.
             IBM drive. Why not?

Please respond via e-mail since I have cross posted this and only read
these groups occasionally.
