[net.ham-radio] VLF antennas

brosen@BBN-SPCA.ARPA (Bruce L. Rosen) (10/17/85)

I received my new Heathkit catalog today, in which there appeared a new
product: a fairly low-cost VLF converter kit.

I would appreciate references/suggestions as to a suitable receiving antenna
for VLF (10-500 KHz). I understand that loop antennas are popular.

Thanks! Bruce (K1FFX)

My favorite antenna for general tuning around on VLF, LF and HF is an active
whip antenna (untuned). It is basically a J-FET follower direct coupled
into a PNP. My whip is about 3 feet long (anything much longer and I get
broadcast overload).

I once tried a large untuned shielded loop by throwing a length of RG-58
coax over the house roof. The ends were brought in a window and properly
connected to the rcvr. This antenna worked quite well, too.
