I recently installed Windows 3.0 on my 386SX. Since the instructions
said that it would work best with 6-8 meg of free disk space (for swapping
memory pages), I set up a logical drive on the hard disk ~8 meg in size
so that there would always be free space available regardless of how much
other junk I may have sitting on my disk.
How do I tell windows to use that area for it's swapping space?
I did notice that the install program put a line in my control files
(either autoexec.bat or config.sys, I can't remember which) specifying
a TEMP variable and temp directory under \WINDOWS. Will modifying this
line accomplish my goal?
I'm looking for anyone who can confirm or deny this.
Please E-mail me. I don't subscribe to this group. If there is some
other group I should post this to instead, let me know.

The swap file only exists in enhanced mode and you needn't worry about partitions... Somewhere in \windows or \windows\system you'll find a program called 'swapfile.exe' (I think that's what it's called). Run this in real mode and you can use it to configure a permanent swapfile on that partition of yours. For this the program want's contiguous sectors on the disk. But if you created this partitionand formatted it you shouldn't have a problem. That should do it, Dan.

There is a group called windows.ms which stands for Windows 3.0 that could help you alot. I have my windows3 set up with a permanent swapfile. What windows3 does is it sets up a 8 MB hidden file on your hard drive that it uses to swap to. Simply type: win /r swapfile to run the utility which sets up a permanent swapfile. I assume you could then direct it to your logical drive. Yell if you need help. Vince vahamri@eos.ncsu.edu
