[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] America Online w/PC - Tech Question

dewhirst@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (04/27/91)

Extreme frustration is the keyword here. Is anyone else out there using the PC
software for America Online from dual 720K drives? The installation
instructions clearly state that the software requires a Meg or more on disk,
but I think there are three possible solutions to this problem:

--> Install the software on hard drive, delete all of the files I will never
need like printer software and the help file, then copy to floppy. I am
willing to sacrifice a lot in the way of an interface to get it to run.
Anybody know what files are *essential* to running the software?

--> From the structure of the AOL.BAT file, it appears that the software simply
looks for all of the files on the same volume. Is it possible to modify this?
Are the other paths in the GEOS.EXE?

--> Or, has anyone heard of a utility that makes the CPU think that two
floppies are actually a single small HD or floppy?

CS relations and CR Hotline both stonewall and say it is not possible to run
the software from low density drives. This is crazy.

I will be stuck in the middle of nowhere this summer, and am in danger of
losing my e-mail (or going to another service) if I cannot get the software to
run on my laptop PC - Dual 720K floppies only.
