[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Types of PS/2 Model 70 computers

U12570@uicvm.uic.edu (Ed Garay) (05/08/91)

I have an IBM PS/2 Model 70 Type 8570-E61.

What kind of machine is this? That is, how fast is it?

Can I add a second hard disk to it?
All of its three slots are used up, and I have one 60MB hard disk
and one 1.44MB 3.5" floppy drive. I'd like to add, at least, another
100+ MB of disk space to this unit. Can it be done without replacing
the 60MB fixed disk?

Any recommendations?
Thanks

It's a 32-bit MicroChannel machine. The CPU is a 16MHz 386DX, with a
60M hard drive using a modified ESDI-type interface. (E = entry level,
i.e. 16MHZ, 61 = 60M hard disk) The bus runs at 20MHz.

Technically, you can add a second drive to the interposer card, it is
supported by the hardware. It is not, however, supported by IBM so you
won't get help from them doing it.

CORE International (407)997-6055 makes hard disks that fit in the
second floppy bay, as do a very few other manufacturers. I don't know
if this would require a slot, if it does, you're stuck.

You can replace the drive with a 120M hard disk from various places,
it's usually a refurbished IBM 120M drive, which is extremely reliable
but usually pricey. I've seen third party 80M-240M drives that can be
swapped for the 60M drive.

Computer Service Supply can sell you a 120M drive, and buy your 60M disk.
They've advertised in PC Week in the past, I don't have their number
handy.
