After several years of not having to worry about "the 640K barrier" because I was running Unix, I now have to get up to speed on what's up in the DOS world. My state-of-the-art DOS machine is a 10 Mhz 286 box with 4 MB of RAM. At this point, I've disabled 384K, giving the machine a total of 640K base plus 3072K extended memory (1MB on motherboard and 3MB on Elephant RAM board). The Elephant board won't do hardware EMS. What can be done with this platform? Are there any memory management utilities that will actually use the 3MB of RAM? At this point I'm using 2MB for a VDISK RAM disk and the other MB for PC-CACHE (version 5.5). I've heard that PC-CACHE isn't reliable. Is this true? Can TSRs be loaded into extended memory on a 286? Can Windows 3.0 or Desqview use the extended memory on a 286? Do any of the EMS simulators work? Should I use one? What Windows 3.0 modes are available on a 286? Can you run DOS programs inside Windows windows. Thanks for any help you can offer. As usual, e-mail direct to me, unless you're sure the net needs to know. I will post a summary if there is interest. -- David Beckemeyer (david@bdt.COM) | "I'll forgive you Dad... If you have Beckemeyer Development Tools | a breath mint." P.O.
