[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] hard drive problems!!!

woody@ritcsh.csh.rit.edu (Craig Woodward) (05/12/91)

I've had the worst problems with a ST250R. Now I face another, it seems that
the drive dosent like to spin up. I turned it on one day after a rest from a
long period of activity, and it made this little squeel and stopped. I took
the drive out of the assembly and shook it (torqured it a little to rotate the
disks) and tried again, it worked. Now the problem-- it like to be torqued
every time I leave it off for more that a few hours. Normaly this is not a
problem because it's usualy on, butI'd thather not go climbing in there every
time I want to restart the computer. Any clue as to why this is happening or
how to correct it would be appreciated.

What Woody has described is a failure mode commonly known as "stiction" in
which the heads adhere to the platters and cause the disk to not spin up.
His solution of rotating the platters slightly is the recommended bandaid.

The fix is to have a qualified technician clean or replace the disk
platters.

Stiction is a very common problem with the Seagate ST225/ST238R and
ST251/ST277R drives (ST250R is not a valid Seagate model number).

If there's a FAQ for this news group this certainly ought to be in it.

I have a st251 with this problem and its been to the repairs 3 times and they
NEVER ccould even detect the porblem. I suspect this is beacus the car trip
there unsticks the drive and then they powered it up and down over and over
again and it never happened. I told them it had to sit over night at least and
they said they tried that but it still spun up. Isuspect they moved it during
that time. They said it was a power problem but is a 220watt supply with
NOTHNG else but the drive connected to it won't do then nothing will (esp.
with a motherboard and three opther drives connected)

Now I have a sticky drive and the repairs are out of warranty!!!!

And my family don't take too well to the electricity being consumed in never
turning the computer off!
