[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Help! SHARE, FCBs, and Large Partitions

wwitt@adara.intel.com (05/28/91)

Hello!

Ever since I heard that large partitions under DOS 4 require SHARE to be
loaded, I've wondered what exactly SHARE does in this case. Now I'm no
longer just wondering about it, but absolutely need to know. I'm
hoping that someone out there can help me.

From the information I've been able to gather, I understand that SHARE
handles requests for files that are opened using FCBs instead of file
handles. Since FCBs implicitly limit a partition to 32 Meg (or actually
some maximum number of clusters, I guess), special action needs to be
taken when an application tries to open a file on a large partition via
an FCB. SHARE takes this special action.

Is the above correct so far? If it's not, please straighten me out. If
it is, please fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle. What exactly does
SHARE do when it sees that an application is trying to open a file using
an FCB? Does it just let the attempt fail?

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide.
Please e-mail responses if possible, but posting them is ok, too.

Thanks.
