[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Backup Programs

larry@boris.webo.dg.com ( Larry Rogers) (05/30/91)

Could people out there give me some input on the best backup tape and or
backup programs to use? I have a Seagate ST296 80Meg drive with a Seagate
ST-01 controller. I have tried a trial copy of fastback, and it couldn't
get the disk to pass any of its tests, nor could it backup anything, even
in slow mode. Then I tried a friends copy of PCTOOLS backup, because I
didn't want to buy it if it didn't work, and the company could not tell
me if it worked for sure. That has all kinds of other problems that just
seem to be bug related. For example, I make a backup, and then I try
to verify it and it tells me that the disk is not a backup even though
I did it in slow speed and can see the PCBACKUP.001 file on the disk.

Anyway, PCTOOLS is buggy, Fastback doesn't work at all. I NEED a dependable
backup program that compresses that is relatively fast and works with a
SCSI drive. It doesn't have to be blazingly fast, and dependability is
much more important. I need it soon, because my hard disk is getting real
flaky. MTBF just expired.
