[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Using Macintosh SIMMS on a PC Compatible

smisra@eos.ncsu.edu (SAURABH MISRA) (06/17/91)

I have one meg's worth 256K SIMMS (four of them) that
came out of my Mac (150ns) Can I use these for memory
upgrade in my 286-12?? If these are too slow, can I use
them as some sort of RAM Disk?? Thanks

Mac memory will not work on IBM PC's at all, no matter what the speed.
Memory in the macintosh do not utilitize partiy check SIMMS. Macintosh
memory are of the configuration 1x8 (an example) whereas its equivalent
on the PC would be 1x9 since you have that extra partiy checking "bit".

As far as I know, there would be no applications on any typical IBM-PC
setup (ie video card RAM) set-up that could utilize the Mac RAM. Might
be wise to just sell it to another Mac owner and use the money to by
some compatible RAM.

I'm no expert on this so I could be very wrong. Just trying to help :).

Don't try doing it. I know that the SIMMS will not work in a
PC (Mac SIMMs are 256k x 8 while the corresponding PC SIMM would
be 256k x 9). PC SIMMs check for parity while Mac SIMMs don't
