[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] DOS 5 and VDISK, Compaq Tape questions.

marshall@wind55.seri.gov (Marshall L. Buhl Jr.) (06/20/91)

Like many of us, I am considering upgrading my home PC and all my work
PCs to DOS 5. I have two questions.

Does the VDISK or whatever it's called that comes with MS DOS 5 support
large virtual drives? DOS 4.01 was limited to only 4MB. I'm hoping
DOS 5 will support drives up to 16MB. Compaq DOS 3.31 supports large
drives. I don't know if this is true for Compaq DOS 4.01, but Dell DOS
4.01 is limited to 4MB.

And speaking of Compaqs. I have an ancient Compaq 386/16 that's running
Compaq DOS 3.31 and I have the Compaq 40MB tape drive. It uses Compaq's
crummy TAPE utility. I once backed up my disks onto the tape, then
reformatted my disk for DOS 4.01 (non-Compaq - generic Microsoft w/
genuine Microsoft labels on the diskettes). When I tried to run the
Compaq TAPE program to restore the files, it told me I had an incorrect
DOS version and refused to run. I reformatted for DOS 3.31 and went
back to the old ways of doing things.

Will my old TAPE utility run with the new DOS 5 upgrade?

TIA,

Marshall
