hartung@crl.ucsd.edu (Jeff Hartung) (06/20/91)
I have been running MSDOS 3.3, more recently 4.01 (for about a month) and not MSDOS 5.0 on a 12 MHz 286 w/ 8 MHz 80287, AWARD BIOS (Yuck!), and 2 Mb total RAM (in 1 Mb DRAM Chips). I have used Above DISK+ V4.0 to turn some of that extended memory into LIM EMS 4.0, which I had successfully used w/ Quattro Pro 1.0, and somewhat less successfully had attempted to use with WordPerfect 5.1 (I frequently get errors such as "Cannot find WP.FIL(0)" when I run WP 5.1 with the EMS turned on.) Anyhow, since my main need for EMS was for some HUGE spreadsheets I often load into QUATTRO PRO, I was moderately satisfied. Now I have upgraded to MSDOS 5.0, and Above DISK+ causes my system to crash HARD (necessitating a cold reboot) any time an attemp is made to access EMS, including if I try to run EMS supporting software, if I install either SmartDRV or RAMDRIVE in EMS, or if I run EMS testing software to test the EMS pages. Once it even caused my CMOS to zero, and I had to run SETUP to tell it the proper time, floppies I had, hard disk info, etc. Here are the things I have attempted to do: - Not use 4DOS 3.02 as my shell, and use COMMAND.COM instead. - Not include the DOS=HIGH line in CONFIG.SYS to free up the HMA. - Decrease the size of the SmartDRV and RAMDRIVE to free more memory overall. - Decrease the amount of memory converted to EMS (down to below 512 Kb). Nothing has worked! I am going to call ABOVE software tomorrow for help, but I won't have the box w/ ph. number, etc. until I can go get them from my office. All in all, I have not been real pleased with the large number of BUGS anyhow, since the 386 at work has none of these problems running QEMM386, which unfortunately I cannot run. Does anyone have any experience/advice? I have only had Above DISK+ since November or so. Is there a higher version than 4.0 around, or a better program? I've heard of/seen QRAM, but it appears only to load devices and TSRs high. Does it also allow you to convert extended memory into EMS? Please help! I can't do any work at home until I get this problem solved! Thanks in advance, -- --Jeff Hartung-- Disclaimer: My opinions only, etc., etc., BLAH! BLAH! BLAH!...
