[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] VGA & Monitor incompatibilty?

rh0i+@andrew.cmu.edu (Richard Warren Harris) (06/25/91)

Could someone tell me if this is correct?

I upgraded my motherboard from a 286 to a 386sx, and I was running
this with an Oak VGA card and a small Amstrad B&W monitor. After the
motherboard upgrade, some software stopped working -- like Windows.

When I checked out the manual to the VGA card, it turns out that the
monitor can't support all the resolution modes the card can (and the
dip switch settings on the card reflected that).

When the preview mode in WordPerfect 5.1 hung the machine, I tried
switching the card to EGA mode before running the program, and
configured WP for EGA. That solved the problem.

I tried taking out the VGA card and installed at CGA card instead, and
there I could successfully install and run Windows 3.0. Switching the
VGA card to EGA or CGA mode didn't work out, however.

This pretty clearly points to the VGA (& monitor?) being the problem.

My questions:
1. Has anyone ever experienced this before?
2. What causes this?
3. Why didn't this happen when I was running the 286?

Thanks in advance,
- Rick
