Does anyone know how I can use Gibson's Spinrite II with a 72 Mb hard
disk that was partitioned using Disk Manager?

Subject:Extra External Modem
Lines: 16

I just bought a new computer system and my dealer added a modem to the
package that I don't need (already have one) so I'm looking to sell.
It is an external CBM 1630 modem and is completely Hayes compatable. It
comes with a cable (for hooking to a serial port) and even has a gender changer
so you can mate it with either male or female RS-232s.

It includes Procomm terminal software for IBMs, though it will work
on any machine. It is BRAND NEW- I just don't have any use for it.
It retails for $110.00, and I'll take the highest offer I get in the
next week or so. Email your questions or offers, Thanks!

Hello there.

I'm having a little problem with my computer. Every time I run vpic to
view GIF files and exit, the color scheme becomes really messed up.

If I try to run any character based programs(such as Word Perfect or Norton
Commander), the color is really faded(???) and everything becomes difficult if not impossible to read. It's hard to explain. The only way to fix this is to reboot. I don't know if the problem is from program or the video board. I
never had the problem before...

For your information, my computer is 80386-25 clone, with ATI VGA Wonder with
512K and Seiko 1430 monitor. BTW the mother board is from AMI.

Thanks in advance for your reponse.

Please email since I don't have time to read every single message. Thanks.

wwong@nas.nasa.gov (Wai K. Wong) (01/20/91)

Hi everyone,

I need to get some information from the collective minds of the
the net. I recently had some problems with my hard drives so I am looking
for a tape backup system.

requirements:
        1) price ($200-$400)
        2) Comes with its own controller ( I need both floppies)

would like (but not important):
        1) uses 1/4" tapes
        2) Uses Central Point Backup software or other major backup software.
        3) speed
        4) above 60 megs capability
        5) internal

Thanks in advance for any info and I will post a summary in about a week
or so.

Email or posting to the net is fine.

Thanks again

Answers should include experiences with the news reader

My thanks to those who answered my recent question on how to
program the game port for a joystick on my PC clone (Zeos 386).
(Special thanks to Rolf Michelsen for particularly helpful
information.) My problem was that the BIOS "Read Joystick"
function on my 386 (BIOS interrupt 15h, function 84h) would
correctly read the joystick "fire" buttons, but not the joystick
positions. The joystick position information returned by this
interrupt was just randomly changing "garbage".
As Mr. Michelsen has pointed out, the problem is most likely
due to my cloned joystick card not being recognized by the
boot-up routine. The solution is to read the joystick information
directly from the I/O ports (I/O port address 201h) with an
assembly language routine via the IN and OUT instructions.
The "fire" button status may be read directly from this port,
but the position information must be calculated by using the
timer chips available on the PC motherboard. A routine for
doing this is available in the book "The IBM PC from the Inside
Out" by Sargent and Shoemaker (Addison-Wesley, 1986 (revised
editon), pp. 139 - 140).
I am working on a TSR to intercept BIOS interrupt 15h and
replace function 84h with this routine in order to allow
joystick programs to work properly. I can post the assembly
language source here when it's done (if it is a short program
and there's sufficient interest), or I could e-mail individual
copies to anyone interested. (Or I could put in on "Anonymous
FPT", if someone can tell me just what exactly "Anomymous FPT" is.)
  Thanks again for everyone's help!

An electronics catalog company by the name of DAK features a notebook PC
compatible for $699. It has 640k, a 1 meg silicon hard disk, 2400 bps modem,
serial and RS232 interface ports, back lit LCD screen, rechargable battery
pack, it comes with Microsoft Works and it only weighs 4.4 lbs.

The drawbacks are: Cannot hook up to an external monitor, RAM is not
expandable, 3.5 720k/1.44meg drive costs you an additional $199, their
optional 2 meg silicon HD adds another $200 to the price.

The brand of the notebook PC is NEC. They are on back order right now until
March 18th. Their number is 1-800-325-0800.

Good Luck!

Dave.

I tried it on many AT-s in our institute. With really good hardware I
had no problem, using 820K format on DD floppies. But our old clones
sometimes do not read the 820K format. But I never had problem with
720K (of course, I need to run FDREAD).

Dan ... to get a modem to do what you want you goto to use the Hayes AT
command set. First however you must TALK to the modem first thru' your serial
port, which (in TP anyway) is quite easy to do. So at this point you could
either use your own routines internal to your code (if you don't feel like
writing them there is loads on publin domain) or you could use a fossil
driver. Fossil drivers are quite good because on any 80X86 machine, you can
(once it is running DOS) get in some cases on implementation of the driver.
I know it is also available for some non compatible MSDos machives. Anyway,
the driver is just a TSR, which you call through a specific interrupt ...
like calling any BIOS service really. However, if you use a fossil driver, the
driver must be in memory first to work obviously, but you can check for its
presence. Then once you are sending and receiving to the Modem then you use
the command set. However one thing I forgot to say was that not all modems
are Hayes compatible so they will not use the command set, but to be honest I
never came across one of them in my life ...
I have the actual code (before it was modified) that was used in Spitfire BBS,
and it is very good. I've started writting a BBS, and using this have had the
actual Turbo Pascal program performing 12 different tasks but still managed to
get info from the modem without losing characters. This was under MSDOS.
If you need any routines, or specific help ... 'cos the whole area is quite
broad just mail me ... ok ...
