Hi I've eventually decided that I that RCS would be really useful but there seem to be (at least) three versions for the PC. DOSRCS.ZIP - apparently a port of the original version MYRCS.ZIP - GNU RCS #5.5 MKSRCS.ZIP - from MKS (at a guess :-) SH_RCS - ??? (name might be incorrect but it starts with SH) DOSRCS I tried DOSRCS and it seemed fine, except that \RCS has to be in capitals and RLOG crashes if you ask for the log entries on many files :-( MYRCS.ZIP (GNU RCS #5.5) This seems to clobber the last letter of the filename ie FRED.PAS -> FRED.PAV although it seems to know to put it back if you ask for FRED.PAS The file didn't contain any documentation :-( but did mention that version 5.6 was nearly out. MKSRCS This, I haven't tried. I assumes it's OK for distribution even though MKS is a commercial company (otherwise it wouldn't be available ;-) Given that once you've committed files to an archive (and typed in LOG entries) they probably not compatible, which one would you recommend if you were starting off? My tendency is towards GNU (hopefully 5.6 will be compatible with 5.5) but I don't much like the way it crunches the last letter the file extension. Which do you recommend? MKSRCS is commerical software. You're supposed to pay for it. It definitely isn't "available" as shareware or PD, to my knowledge. Just because somebody posted it to the net doesn't make it legal. Unless MKS has released a toned down version, I'd be suspicious about this product.` *** Randy Hyde rhyde@ucrmath.ucr.edu
