THE MOST RECENT COMPARABLE LOW CAME BACK IN JWNUARY 1978. THIS INFORMATION HELPS TO EXPLAIN THE LESS THAN SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE OF OUR HIGHER DX FREQUENCIES AT A TIME OF YEAR WHEN THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE AT THEIR BEST. THIS LULL DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE 10 METER BAND WILL BE ONLY MARGINAL THIS AUTUMN. HIGHER SOLAR ACTIVITY CAN COME AT LEAST ANOTHER YEAR OF THIS SUNSPOT CYCLE, AND SEPTEMBER IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE AUTUMN DX SEASON. EVEN 50 MHZ HAS BEEN OPEN FROM SOME SOUTHERN TIER STATES. AREAS OF THE SUN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LOW SOLAR FLUX WILL BE RETURNING TO VIEW LATE THIS WEEK. THERE IS SOME INDICATION THAT THEY WILL BE MORE ACTIVE THIS TIME AROUND. MORE ON THIS PROSPECT LATER THIS WEEK. WE WERE IN A PERIOD OF LOW GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY AT BULLETIN TIME. THIS SHOULD LAST THROUGH ABOUT THE 16TH, MAKING FOR GOOD SIGNALS ON ALL DX FREQUENCIES. HIGHER SIGNAL ABSORPTION AND POSSIBLE AURORAL EFFECTS ARE LIKELY THE 17TH THROUGH 23RD. BETTER OVERALL PROPAGATION AND HIGHER MUF ARE EXPECTED DURING THE FINAL WEEK OF SEPTEMBER AND MUCH OF OCTOBER AR QST DE W1AW HR SATELLITE BULLETIN NR 248 FROM ARRL HEADQUARTERS NEWINGTON CT SEPTEMBER 14, 1983 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT OSCAR 10 APOGEE TIMES AND POSITIONS, SEPT 15 0040Z AT 10N 102W 1220Z AT 10N 277W SEPT 16 0001Z AT 10N H93W 1140Z AT 10N 268W 2320Z AT 10N 83W OTHER AMATEUR SATELLITE REFERENCE ORBITS, SEPT 15 OSCAR 9 0106Z AT 148W RS5 0141Z AT 85W RS6 0126Z AT 88W RS7 0130Z AT 85W RS8 0031Z AT 67W SEPT 16 OSCAR 9 0045Z AT 143W RS5 0136Z AT 86W RS6 0111Z AT 85W RS7 0121Z AT 84W RS8 0029Z AT 67W NOAA 7 EQUATOR CROSSING TIMES AND LONGITUDES, SEPT 15 1655Z AT 25W 1837Z AT 51W 1944Z AT 76W FREQUENCY 137.50 MHZ NOAA 8 EQUATOR CROSSING TIMES AND LONGITUDES, SEPT 15 1034Z AT 135W 1215Z AT 110W 1357Z AT 84W FREQUENCY 137.50 MHZ AR GL DE W1AW THIS IS ARRL HQ STATION W1AW NEWINGTON CT. And when the big, commercial interests petition the FCC for ever-increasing segments of the amateur spectrum, you can hire your own lawyer at $100/hour and up to argue your right before the Commission to keep your HF, 2M, 220, et al. Jusst how much spectrum do you think we'd have left if there were no ARRL? Or do you recommend do-it-yourself law, too? -- Brint Cooper ARPA: abc@brl.arpa UUCP: ...{seismo,decvax,cbosgd}!brl-tgr!abc
