Sounds like a disk cacheing problem.  The first disk you load into the drive
is having it's directory read into the cache and subsequent DIR commands 
just read what is in the cache even if you have changed diskettes.  The CTRL-C
must flush the cache and force the DIR command to read the actual diskette.
Are you using a software based disk cache utility (would be loaded into 
memory in you CONFIG.SYS file.)  Try disabling it and see what happens.  
Perhaps the software is corrupt.  If your PC supports hardware disk cacheing, 
try turning that off to to see if the situation improves.
