Has anyone on the net been able to compare the performance of these
new radios?  I would appreciate any word on the relative [de]merits
of the units available.

I agree the prices look too high for right now, but if the cellular phone
lobby gets its way, these things might be forced off the market.  Remember
the 10-meter linear amplifer ban.
