[net.ham-radio] Comments on Heath's active antenna?

wales@ucla-cs.UUCP (11/26/85)

Can anyone comment on the performance (or lack thereof) of the new Heath
HD-1424 Active SWL Antenna (p. 6 of their most recent catalog)?

I live in an apartment and currently make do with a random-length long-
wire antenna on my SW receiver. (I don't transmit out of my apartment,
needless to say. :-})

Rich:
hHaven't seen the heath active antenna unit yet, but have built very
small receiving antennas in the past, especially loops. The associated
amplifier was a six stage dc coupled broadband (video) amplifier. The
results were absolutely fantastic! I could hear as much on a three-ft.
diameter loop inside my apartment as with a G5RV located outside. To boot,
I was also able to null local man-made noise by rotating the loop. However,
what prompted me to answer your article was the fact you feel restrained
by cliff dwelling. You didn't say what floor you reside on, but my present
apartment QTH is on the third floor. I use a simple end-fed wire (black,
nearly invisible teflon #28) working against a steam pipe and fed via an
L-network using an ARC-5 roller coil. It's well insulated but close to
the stucture. Nevertheless, it works FB on all bands 80 through 10 meters.
I routinely use a Ten-Tec Argonaut At two or three watts and my log is
filled with QSOs on CW, AMTOR, and even SSB. When approprriate I run 125 watts,
but my neighbors rarely know when I'm xmtng. Good luck. I'd be curious to know
more abt your experienc with the Heath ant (or anyone else's).
