[net.ham-radio] NICAD battery question

rjr@mgweed.UUCP (Bob Roehrig) (12/04/85)

I have been told that recent changes in NICAD battery construction or
materials has eliminated the memory effect problems. Is this true and
if so, how recent were these changes?

Memory effect aside, it is still my experience that NICADS seem to be
good for about 2-3 years at most. I am comparing my 10 year old Motorola
H-T 200 to my present Kenwood 2500 which I have had since the middle of
1982. When I had the H-t 200, I used to leave the thing sit in the charger
all the time with a 5ma current trickle on it. With the 2500, I charge it
with the wall charger for 16 hours and take it off and do not charge it
until the low battery indicator flashes. It seems to me that there has
been no difference in life of these packs.
