I looking for feedback from anyone who has had direct experience with either ICOM or Kenwood HF transceivers in a mobile environment. I'm currently using an ICOM IC-720A for dedicated mobile use which has been in my vehicle for the past three years. Although the front end of the 720A is very good, the noise blanker, under crowded band conditions as for example on 20m, or 40m, or in the presence of moderately strong carriers, is virtually ineffective. The problem is one of a basic design flaw in the noise blanker and its associated circuitry. If there is anyone who has first-hand experience with an HF transceiver in a mobile environment which has a EFFECTIVE noise blanker under both crowded band conditions and in the presence of strong carriers, please contact me.
