[comp.os.msdos.apps] MS-Word 4.0: desperatly seeking for help...

zeller@bernina.ethz.ch (Lukas Zeller) (12/15/90)

I hope I wont't get flamed for this question. Please consider that I'm one of
these people who are totally incomatible with real life (= text processing
on a PC) because they're using one of these toys for little children called
macintosh :-) :-). That is, normally. But now I'm confronted with a solid
problem on a solid PC. And after spending lots of time struggling with
Word and - YES! - reading its manual, and asking people who think they know
Word well and finding out nothing at all.... I'm asking YOU...

The problem: A document with two columns, the left column containing simple
text pagagraphs, the right column containing notes *associated* to the
paragraphs on the left like:

1.This is a simple These are notes
Text paragraph to (1.) on the left.
 one the left.
                         This is a second note
And yet another still belonging to (1.)
 one, which belongs
 to (1.).

2.This is (2.), bla, Note to (2.) etc. etc.
 bla bla....

This kind of formatting was done using the "side-by-side" option and the
predefined styles "2L" and "2R". No (big) problem as far.
Buuut... when the document is printed (or simply repaginated), dear Word
places the page breaks *anywhere* within the page. This leads to two
visible effects on the printout: 1. The lower half of some pages is
empty, 2. Some pages are printed with the left column ok but with a sudden
break in the middle of the right column (in the example above, "2.This..."
would be on page N, but "Note to (2.)..." would be printed on page N+1).

That's it. I know about the "keep lines together" and "Page break before"
attributes and did remove them. I removed all hard page breaks. I removed
all hidden text. I checked the spacing before and after the paragraphs for
false (huge) values. I changed the margins. But to no avail. :-( :-(

Can anyone help? Thanks a lot!!!.

(please e-mail. If the results are of interest for others (I doubt it)
I'll post a summary).
