[comp.os.msdos.apps] Looking for a good 386 Multitasker

dhosek@lucy.claremont.edu (Don Hosek) (01/21/91)

I'm looking for a good multitasker (commercial shareware or pd)
that will allow me the following features (or some subset
thereof)

	- Ability to send programs into the background to execute
(a la the VMS SPAWN/NOW or Unix ...& commands).
	- Ability to switch between two or more programs in
interactive mode (e.g., PCTeX, uEMACS and Kermit)
	- I'd prefer not to use a system that wastes memory and
CPU on a graphic interface system (e.g., Windows)
if I can. If I must have windows, it is important
that windows be more X-window-like than Mac-like.
I will not use a mouse.

I've got a 386 CPU and can go up to 16M if necessary.

where DIRECTORY is the FTP directory (sans "anonymous") and
FILENAME is the filename, e.g. "send [tex]00readme.txt". There is
a list of files in each directory under the name 00files.txt
Binary files are not available by this technique.

How about unix/386? It has all the features that you want.
If you don't need the development stuff then you can get the
SCO Xenix basic system fairly cheaply.
I think that Desqview/386 (sp?) also has all the features
that you want and is cheaper.

If you use QEMM386 and Desqview together, it makes wonderful use of available
memory so that you have more memory to run other programs. I believe Quarter-
deck sells these two together as a package called Desqview 386.

Just a happy customer :)
