In the January,86 issue of QST, the ICOM IC-735 HF transceiver was 'reviewed' in their Product Review section. Specifically designed for mobile/portable operation, QST's 'review' of the IC-735 failed to address substantive issues, even the most fundamental mobile/portable-specific operational features of the IC-735 which either enhance or degrade it's application to this unique subset of amateur radio. For the past four years I have been using an IC-720A, in a dedicated mobile environment, which, at the time it was purchased, was considered to be the 'top-of-the-line' of the ICOM offerings. In practice, however, even the most basic features, such as adequate undistorted audio output, or even more importantly, an effective noise blanker for the mobile environment, were not, in my opinion, considered adequately in the design of this transceiver. A thorough product review would have provided at least substantive guidelines so that in its application to a particular operating environment, a knowledgeble choice could be made. I am once again searching for another HF transceiver for dedicated mobile operation. If anyone can identify a sound product review with substantive information, addressing the noise blanker, selectivity, and certainly, mobile ergometrics, I would greatly appreciate your effort.
