I recommend that you call them once more, if you don't get a definite answer make them check into the problem and give you a "call-back"; don't let them give you a, "well, try this..." answer. Microsoft support is tiered, so you might also ask to speak with a Windows specialist. I haven't tried multitasking DOS programs in Windows because Desqview does such a good job of that. I use Windows for "fun" stuff only right now: .bmp images, .rol sound files for my Soundblaster, Fractint for Windows, Solitaire, Chess, etc. Remember that you can run Windows inside Desqview, but only in Standard or Real mode, and in no higher resolution than standard VGA. The neatest thing about Desqview 386 is that it now comes bundled with QEMM (the BEST extended memory manager on the market) and Manifest (the BEST system analyzer on the market--check out PC Mag's recent review). Manifest is GREAT! You can see exactly how your memory is being utilized by each program, you can solve memory conflicts, DMA conflicts, interrupt conflicts, benchmark your memory, check CMOS setup and environment setup, look at all your BIOS addresses, etc., etc.--this program is GREAT, and it runs outside of Desqview as well as within a window under Desqview. I run Windows in Enhanced mode with QEMM loaded, and it works absolutely flawlessly. You not only can place all your drivers in high memory (smartdrive, mouse, etc.--even "files=" and "buffers=") but you can also put them just where you want them to be in high ram. QEMM and Windows 3.0 is really the best combination, even if you don't use Desqview. Why did you try to exclude C400-C7FF? The video BIOS is usually shadowed to the 32k region at C000-C7FF; is this what you intended to "exclude"? To be on the safe side, try the following: EMMEXCLUDE=C000-C7FF (area for shadowed video BIOS) EMMEXCLUDE=F000-FFFF (area for shadowed system BIOS) This will keep your memory manager from messing with any of the shadowed BIOS. If you had QEMM, you could run its analyzer when you start up Windows in Enhanced mode to see what memory conflicts were occuring which might cause Windows to abort. Of course if you had QEMM you might find that the problem mysteriously disappears. ;) I'm assuming that you are loading HIMEM.SYS in the first line of your config.sys file, right? Anyway, there's my $.02. I know how frustrating it can be to try to get things to run the way you want them to. It took me two weeks of agony to finally realize that I had a flaky motherboard utility and that I couldn't use normal keyboard hotkeys to change system configurations when a memory manager was loaded (plus various other time-consuming frustrations). As with any other superVGA program in DESQview, however, if you pop up the DV menu while Windows has the screen, switch to another task, and then return to Windows, the Windows screen image will be trashed. It is my current understanding that W3.0 will work (in 386 enhanced mode) with QEMM 5.11 and later. Earlier versions should/might come up in standard mode. Since 800x600x256 requires 512K, you're going to lose part of the display whenever you switch back to Windows. So, if you don't plan on switching from Windows, go ahead and use the SVGA mode. Of course, if you're not going to switch to another Desqview window, why use Desqview at all? I regularly use SVGA programs inside of Desqview, but I usually never switch away to another window unless the program has a command to refresh the screen or I don't care about losing part of the display. [on the heels of a discussion of SVGA under Desqview] Back on the farm: I can't even run standard mode, only real. Same symptoms: I get popped back to a DOS prompt (w/o a cursor) after the stupid logo (stupid because instead of the logo I would have preferred some diagnostic messages). I've tried various combinations of himem, emm386, smartdrv, loading without turbo, you name it. What's going on?!!??
