[comp.os.msdos.apps] Windows and QEMM

u8902741@cs.uow.edu.au (Kiddie) (04/14/91)

I remember a while ago there was talk about getting Windows to work with QEMM
I have QEMM 5.11 and Windows 3 and from memory, last time i used it, i used
a winhiram.xvd file or something. Now ive got the diskspace back, i want
to re-install windows and i cant. It always shows me the opening screen
then goed back to the dos prompt.
The new disk space ive got is a SCSI removeable so maybe its this thats
causing the problems.
  Can anyone help ?
   Thanks

Hi,

According to QEMM manual if you have a SCSI drive you may face
problems if you use it to run programs off it with QEMM install. This
is because of the DMA involved. If the SCSI card and driver makes the
drive appear as any other drive type and other drivers than there should
not be a problem.

If it does appear as a SCSI drive than add DISKBUF=2 to the
qemm.sys line. This causes a non-mapped memory for the drive. The larger
the number usually means better performance at the expense of conventional
memory. The second possibility is that the SCSI card is using some memory
that QEMM cannot identify and hence uses it for highmem. So when WINDOWS
trys to use memory it may put something into this and presto instant
conflict and WINDOWS dies. Use Manifest to determine what to
include and what not to include.

I have a SCSI removeable drive (the Syquest). There was a memory
conflict such that I could not load my mouse driver. So I excluded CA00-CAFF
from the Himem area. I didn't add the DISKBUF line and it still worked.
You need to use the RAM parameter for WINDOWS to work.

Also you did not mention what computer you are using. Compaq has alot
of options. It may be this that is causing problems.

Solution: first try to run windows with himem. See if it works.
Second use the RAM parameter with almost no drivers and see if windows works.
If it works try adding one driver at a time. If all else fails, I would
recommend that you read the manual on system analysis with QEMM.

	Good Luck!

Michael
