[comp.os.msdos.apps] Question: Windows 3.0

21chalasani@gw.wmich.edu (06/03/91)

Hi to those gurus in msdos/windows,

I have a few problems in windows, for which I hope to find a quick
solution. The problems are listed as follows. Some of them might real stupid,
but for mysake, please answer them if you know. (I have been using MS dos for
quite a few years now, but started using Windows 3.0 only a few weeks back)
Thanks in advance...

/------ Problem 1 ------/

As you know, the application "PaintBrush" which comes with the windows
package, I had a small problem with it. One of my profs. after using it
accidently "deleted" the application. With the help of "Norton Utilites
5.0" (quick unerase), I was able to recover the file. But the problem
araised when I could "not" get the "ICON" for the paint brush back. The
application ran when I executed it from the " file manager ". So after
trying all possibilites and trying to refer to the manual, I finally got
fed up and talked to our University (business college) Computers
in-charge regarding the icon stuff. He said that there was no way but
to reinstall the application. But, I think there is/should be a way
to get the Icons back instead of reinstalling the total software. Any
suggestions...? I tried using the "windows set up" where the computer
scans for window application and reports all possible applications.

/------ Problem 2 ------/

Is there any way to get general application (such as budget,
Harvard graphics etc..) appear as an ICON in windows...?

You could try this:

	(i)	Take a look at the file menu in the PM
	(ii)	You'll see 'NEW'.
(iii)	Choose that and you'll then need to choose to construct a
program item (i.e. NOT a group item).
(iv)	You'll then be asked for a description and a command line.
	(v)	Add a description and then choose browse. Select your req'd
executeable and then select 'change icon'.You can then choose
any icons that may be available.
(vi)	Click a coupla OK's and that's it.
(vii)	The new icon will appear in the current group (one of those
		windows with icons in!).

That should solve your second problem and I strongly suspect it'll fix the firstalso.

Hope thats some help,
			Dan :)

Llama droppings. Unless NORTON failed to restore the *whole* file,
you've got it. The Icon in a "real" windows app is compiled inot the
program. (Link-loaded, really, at Resource Resolution phase.)
If you have un-erased the file, the Icon information should also be
restored. However, the PROGRAM MANAGER may need to be reminded of it:

    select the Program Manager subwindow in which PBRUSH belongs;
    Alt-File, New...
"Paintbrush" PBRUSH.EXE [Change Icon] PBRUSH.EXE [SAVE] [SAVE]
should do the trick.

Same trick. If the program doesn't come with an icon, you'll have
to either choose from the defaults built into program manager or paint
your own with the SDK Icon Editor, which unfortunately you don't get free.
If you find someone with an SDK, *ask* them the question, not those
silly Business Dept. people who told you to re-install.

  /-------- Problem 0 -----/
Regarding the professor accidentally deleting the files: you might
want to set FILE MANAGER's CONFIRM settings higher to give you a
chance to hit N next time! And maybe change the protection to read
only on the .EXE files?

Good luck,

The Icon is Stored in the *.EXE Files so Start to do the Folowing:
In the Programm - Manager select the FILE - NEW Menu-Item
  Choose New Program
  Search for the Application 'PBRUSH.EXE'
  OK.

If the program isn't corrupted, it should work.
Else you have to reinstall the program PBRUSH.EXE, it should be
enough, if you just copied it from the Windows-Installation-Disk
(don't know on wich disk it is)

Do the same as said above, but search for the Filename of your
aplication instead.
If it's an ordinary dos-app, Windows will use a dull Symbol.
You can change this while installing the program.

Have fun,
Erik.

[Long description of adding a program item in Program Manager deleted]

A more intuitive approach is:

Start file manager, find the executable file (PBRUSH.EXE in this case).
Arrange your screen things so that both the File Manager and the
Program Manager windows are visible.
Move the mouse cursor to the file in File Manager. Depress the left
mouse button. While holding it down, move the mouse cursor to the
Program Manager window. Release the button.
