[comp.os.msdos.apps] MS-DOS 5.0, impressions of a non-beta tester

oneel@heawk1.gsfc.nasa.gov ( Bruce Oneel ) (06/13/91)

So, MS-DOS 5.0 was released yesterday... Like a good techno-geek I
went down to the local egg-head store and plunked down my $40 for the
upgrade. I installed it this morning.

It comes with fairly complete documentation and mine came on 3 720k
diskettes. It took about 0.5 hrs to install.

The system was a clone AT with misc hardware, but no TSR's and no
non-standard hardware. I run windows, BC++, and TPW on it only.

The install program seemed to go well. It was a bit neater about the
installation then other programs like it that I've seen. The PC-DOS
4.0 setup program failed miserably for me. It gave me good choices
except for the dos directory. Mine was called \DOS400 and I wanted
it to be \DOS500 when I got done. I didn't realize it would install
the new version in the old directory (it wasn't clear from the prompts
screens) so I had to restart after I screwed up and tried to move the
files over to \DOS500. It took about an hr to recover from that screw
up (that's what I get for doing that at 0500).

Windows, bc++, and tpw worked without a hitch. When I got done I had
610k free (I think) rather than about 570k with PC-DOS 4.0. NDD 4.51
with MS-DOS 3.3 took 6+ minutes to read the whole disk. With PC-DOS
4.0 it took about 7:45 minutes, and now with MS-DOS 5.0 we're back
down to 6:15 to read the whole disk.

I haven't explored it yet but these are the things I noticed.

mem gives you some more info. dir has quite a few sorting options as
well as showing you the size of the files in the directory (5
iterations to get this in? you're kidding!) It's nice. The on-line
help is nice for me. It helps in remembering the parameters. The
shell is ok. If you like those sorts of things it might work well for
you. The new basic seems to be fairly quick (12mhz 286). The new
editor is nice compared to edlin. In both the editor as well as the
new basic (they're the same apparently) if you don't like microsoft's
way of doing things (tabs, alt keys, and such) too bad. I'll still
keep qedit around. The size of the \DOS500 directory is about 2meg.
Obviously some if it could be removed.

Summary: I'm happy to have paid $40 for this. Much more and I
wouldn't have gone to the trouble.

Yep. EDIT.COM is a 413-byte program which merely invokes QBASIC with a
switch to turn off the non-editor functions. IMHO, if I'm going to load
a quarter-meg editor, it had better have unlimited file sizes, a full
extension language, etc.... I second the opinion of sticking with Qedit
for the little stuff (and I'll keep using Epsilon for the big jobs).
