[net.ham-radio] Rebuilding WWII surplus ARC \"Command\" radio sets

andy@aids-unix.ARPA (Andy Cromarty, N6JLJ) (01/17/86)

I have a BC-348-R Signal Corps military surplus receiver. I have been
going crazy trying to find a schematic for it, or at the very least,
what kind of power and where to apply it to get it working. Please
don't let this noble rig go to waste.

If my memory serves me correctly, about 15 years ago the ARRL
publication "Understanding Amateur Radio" contained a detailed
description of the WWII ARC transmitters and receivers, including
fairly complete specifications on how to rebuild them for improved
performance. I believe it included details on converting the recevier
to be a superregen, which improves selectivity substantially. I
think it also addressed the power supply problem -- these sets typically
needed unusual DC voltages, normally supplied by dynamotors, as
noted by N2XS.

Unfortunately, the contents of this ARRL book changes in each edition,
so current copies do not contain this info, but a large local public
library may have a copy from 1970 (plus or minus a few years)
containing the conversion info for surplus WWII equipment. (By the
way, I think those issues of UAR were among the best books on ham radio
ever written -- the credit goes to George Grammer of ARRL, if I
remember correctly.)
