[comp.os.msdos.apps] need good

A friend of mine bought a grayscale scanner cheap, and it didn't come with
any scanning or image processing software. We are reasonably sure it is
HP ScanJet compatible, though, so he needs some software that can do the
scanning and play with the resulting image. We have seen software advertised
for ~$400 but this is too pricy. Is there anything available chaper, or even
public domain?

Oops! I was talking to my friend, and he said that although it uses HP parts,
it is more likely Canon compatible.
