I've just install dos 5.0 and I'm having problems running windows and wondered if anybody can help. The problem is that I can type win and I will get the title screen, but then it will go back to the prompt most of the time, but on about the third or fourth consequtive try windows will come up fine, but will crash sometimes with the message that I've had a protected mode violation. The computer is a 286 and I'm trying to start windows in standard mode. Real mode works fine, but obviously, I want to run standard mode to run certain applications. Everything was working fine before I upgraded the OS! Here's what I've done: 1. Since I was running dos 3.3 with partitioned disks I backed up some of the files and then removed the partions, re-lowlevel formatted the disk and using the dos 5.0 floppy disks (that I got from doing a dos 5.0 setup /f) I booted the system and formated my hard disks (yes 2 of them). The last step was to boot the system using the hard drive and installed dos 5.0 using a:setup. This all works fine and my system is up and running. 2. Now, I re-install windows and everything goes fine except for when I try to boot windows. Other info: system - 286,640K + 2M on DFI AT Rambank + Mouse Systems Mouse + EGA autoexec: (this is the best that I can remember) --------- @echo path = c:\windows;c:\dos temp = c:\dos Note: windows used to be temp = c:\windows config.sys (this is the best that I can remember) ---------- c:\dos\setver.sys c:\himem.sys (if I use the c:\dos\himem.sys from the dos installation, windows will try to boot and abort saying to load himem.sys. I'm using the himem.sys from the windows installation instead. I've tried moving the himem.sys from dos to the top level replacing the one from windows, but that didn't work either.) c:\mscmouse.sys /1/a8 dos=high c:\dos\smartdrive xxx xxx (sorry don't remember the numbers right now) c:\dos\ega.sys Note: I'm using the smartdrive and ega.sys from the dos installations as I thought that they may be newer versions of the software, but I'm using an old version of the himem.sys because my dos 5.0 version doesn't seem to work. Well, it's a long story, but if you have suggestions I would be glad to listen. I've personally had nothing but trouble with the windows software crashing and even with the old version of dos, the installation for windows would only start after I did a cold restart (couldn't use the reset button to get the affects of the new autoexec.bat and config.sys files), but once it started running I would only have the occasional system crash. Thanks in advance. Scott
