I would like to know whether Compaq's dos 3.31 can be used on other machines. Dos 3.31 can handle partitions of more than 32M. I also want to know whether there are any known problems with it. Max Kislik

You SHOULD be able to run Compaq Dos 3.31 on ANY clone. If you also wish to run Desqview, do not use Compaq's expanded memory driver, use Quarterdeck's (QEMM, comes with Desqview 386, or is available separately). I have heard of NO known problems with Compaq DOS 3.31.

Early versions of Compaq 3.31's User Diagnostics had the following problem: On a Compaq Portable 386/20 (gas plasma) with Compaq EGA board in the attached expansion unit and more than 1 megabyte on the motherboard, the Diagnostics could not find the extended memory. The problem went away when the EGA was removed. This might or might not show up on your clone, and it is fixed on, e.g., User Diagnostics version 6.08. Mostly I get "Cannot find directory" messages. But this problem is true of *any* version of DOS which creates partitions greater than 32MB. In particular, you'd get the same error running Compaq 3.31 on a Compaq. I believe Norton 4.5 fixes this problem (for both DOS 3.31 and 4.0). To answer the original poster, I've seen Compaq 3.31 running on a Toshiba 386 laptop with no problems (40MB partition).

Mostly I get "Cannot find directory" messages. Compaq's DOS 3.31 will work on other machines. A long time ago, I tried it on my generic (DTK motherboard, WD disk controller) AT compatible, and it worked flawlessly. I've also seen it run on Everex 286 and 386 machines. I don't know about the later versions, but the older Norton Utilities would fail because they were not written to handle disks larger than 32MB. I don't remember the details, but it had something to do with larger FATs and directories. Mostly I get "Cannot find directory" messages. We are using Norton Advanced v4.5 here, on Compaq 286s with 40mg drives. Have had no problems with Compaq DOS 3.31, and the drives are all in one partition. We even have a Compaq 386 with a 132mg drive in one partition. Have had no problems of any kind with Norton. -- |----------------------------------------------------------------| |Terry Acker | |Boeing Commercial Airplanes ....uunet!bcstec!evtprp0b!tea6219 | |M/S 03-87, P.O.
