[comp.os.msdos.misc] "1701" at boot time and non-recognition of HD = HD death?

Hello. My Miniscribe MFM HD on my XT worked fine for 2 years, and
now, in the midst of a quest for a faulty memory chip, in the course
of which many chip swaps were preformed -- but not on any HD components,
the system gives me a "1701" at boot time and 2 beeps, and refuses
to acknowledge the existence of the HD even to the extent of performing
a low level format with debug.

So, is this a sign of HD death? Or did maybe teeny tiny currents
caused by the removal of a single memory chip from a periheral card
too soon after powering down zap one of those nasty looking chips on
the controller card? Or what? Any advice, or experience by email welcome.
