Last week I posted the following question: >We have a bunch of PC's which should be able to print to a laser printer >connected to a Unix host (a Sun to be exact) which runs the normal BSD-ish >lpd. At the moment, we have a number of them setup with an Ethernet card >and PC-NFS, but this is a kind of expensive solution just to print something. >We don't mind the Ethernet cards much, it's the PC-NFS we want to get rid >of. >Are there any alternative solutions out there (PD preferred, but commercial >also acceptable)? Thanks. I received a reply pointing me to the CUTCP/CUTE package, which contain lpr, lpq and lprm utilities written at the University of British Columbia (Canada). The CUTCP/CUTE is available for anonymous ftp from omnigate.clarkson.edu [128.153.4.2] in directory /pub/cutcp/v2.2-C. I downloaded this and am happy to report we plan on using this in the future. The only drawback of this package is that it can only print existing files, it is not possible to have it go resident and redirect output from the printer port to the unix host. If you need that ability, you might want to check on a package called `TCP Printshare'. This package consists of a client to be run on the PC and a server to be run on the unix machine. The client is a TSR and takes up about 12 kb. You can install the client on an unlimited number of PCs, but for each unix server you need a seperate license. The package is priced at DFl. 2500,- (which is about US$ 1500). The software was developed by (and is being sold by): Simac Baan Service bv., Postbus 105, 3770 AC Barneveld, The Netherlands. If you would like further information, I'm sure Ton Gorter (tongr@bssi.nl) of that company will be glad to help you. (Note: I didn't test this product, I am not affiliated to this company, not even as a customer.) Thanks to the people who took the time to respond to my question.
