Hiya, didn't know exactly where to post this but here goes: In the lab I work in, we collect maybe 2500 files (approx 14k) each night. We have 30 meg mfm drives dos 3.3 and dos 4.01. The problem is after about 1000 files in the same directory, the drives slows down to a crawl. It seems dos was not built to handle so many files in a single directory. I would like some advice on how to fix this problem, to access greater than 1000 files in a single directory FAST. I have tried a disk de-fragmenter (slight improvement but not enough), but I suppose the real answer has something to do with the buffers= and files= in the config.sys file. Also, I am thinking of installing a disk cache (via smartdrv) but don't think it will help PLEASE Let me know if you have an answer or can help in any way possible because after 1000 files the access time for one file can be over five seconds. Let me know if you had a similar problem and how you solved it or any other advice you can give.. Please send mail ddirectly to me, FIZQC@CUNYVM.BITNET since i doubt this is general enough a problem and i dont get to read news that often anyway. FIZQC@CUNYVM.BITNET
