Hi there, I have Procomm Plus installed on a PC which is readily available for other users to log in to get data. The password file is just an ascii file, which could be read by anyone sitting in front of the PC. This means that someone other than myself can get access to the "superuser" password contained in that ASCII file. I would like to know how to protect this password file from other users. I have tried the Norton utilities (file hide) but it seems that if the user already knows the name of the file and where it is located, he can easily type it out. Does anyone know/has any written program that will fix the above problem. Also, does anybody know about a package called "Defender" which is a Software/Hardware blackbox which allows users to dial in, type in some password, and it will hang up and call back the users? I used this a while back as a user, but forgot where I can purchase it now that I need it :-( Your help would be very much appreciated, Brian

Well, I can see what you mean, but does Procomm plus's skimpy host
mode actually let people download ANY file, or shell to Dos? If so,
you might be interested in Telix. It is a shareware comm program much like PC+ but it has many more features. Version 3.12 is the current version,
but 4.0 will be out within a few months as shareware and commercial
software. It comes with a Super good script language called SALT(Script Applications Language for Telix). With this, many many host modes
have been written which can function as a full bbs or secure system.
(Host44 seems to be the best one yet).

If you use Telix, it shouldn't be a problem. As for PC plus, it would be
nice if the passwords were encrypted.

Check out software such as Remote Access or QuickBBS. Both of these have
this capability, and are the most configurable bbs/hosts for the IBM
family of computers. I don't remember whether Host44 can do this or not.
(PS, Remote Access, QuickBBS, and Host44 are also shareware. Better than
and commercial products I've seen...)
