[comp.os.msdos.misc] Dr Dos Problem

krause@prlhp1.prl.philips.co.uk (krause) (02/05/91)

I hope that this is the correct or a least a correct group in which to post
this.

I have just got DR DOS version 5.0. I followed the installation instructions
which set up a new autoexec.bat and config.sys for me. After copying all the
new files setup prompted me to do a warm boot. I did this. A message appeared
on the screen saying 'loading' followed by the question 'load memory max
software'. I typed in 'y'. I was rewarded by the message 'Hidos.sys - incorrect
version of DR DOS'. Up to this point all I did was follow the installation
instructions. Installation is pretty much automatic.

I thought that there might be some old versions of DOS files on the disk, so
I reformatted the disk and let the DR DOS installation sofware create the DOS
partition. Hidos.sys still came up with its error message.

I phoned up the support line, this got me through to a company called Megatech.
They sent me a disk with upgrade software on it. The dates and file sizes on
the upgrade disk were the same as the original software. I loaded the software
all the same. It made no difference.

I later found out that if I did a cold boot, i.e switched the machine off and
on, hidos.sys installed without error. Hidos.sys will not install after a warm
boot.

I am not impressed with software that comes up with this sort of error. It
looks like sofware that has not been checked properly. I have lost confidence
in it. What other problems are lurking?

Can anybody help?
Will hidos.sys work on other '286 machines?
Does it just not like Tandons?
Is there an upgrade I need to get a working version of DR DOS?
Should I stick to MS DOS?

I have installed it on a Tandon PCA20. This is an AT compat. with two 20 meg
hard disks, 2 Megs of ram and a vga adapter fitted.

Thanks in advance,

David Krause

  Regarding HiDOS.sys...

Things have a tendency of staying around during a warm boot, especially
protected memory applications, which is probably the case for extended
memory drivers. The best thing to do whenever rebooting the machine, is
to hit the reset switch; that way you know everything is out. I don't
have DR DOS 5.0, but this is probably the cause.

(1) Check your hard disk thoroughly (e.g. CHKDSK/B/M/C under DRDOS, or use
HDDIAG, the shareware (?) hard disk diagnostic). I had a problem with loading
DRDDOS unless I did a (really) cold boot - turned out to be a flakey disk.

(2) A cold boot could make a difference if you had some strange software
loaded, or if the BIOS does something extremely strange during start-up. Are
you saying that it always works now, or always works after a cold boot, or just
did once?

(3) You don't have a virus, do you?

I wouldn't stick with MS-Dos, as Dr-Dos should work fine. It would
appear that you have aome sort of Hardware flaw or BIOS error. I
have almost an identical setup myself, and Dr-Dos works fine every time.
Are you sure you have the high memory available or set up correctly
for your system? Check the CMOS setup. I've been running Dr-Dos 5 since
the 28th of December, so I doubt there is an upgrade. It sounds like
the people you reached on the phone didn't know what they were doing
anyways. Make sure, with the manual, that Hidos isn't interfering with
any other TSR's, BIOS, or page frames. Quaterdecks Manifest would
help you here. Besides, with manifest which comes with QRAM, you'd
have something even better than hidos!
